Michael Jackson Doctors Won't Be Charged In Singer's Death

California state investigators will not file charges against seven other doctors who treated the late star.

Seven doctors who treated the late Michael Jackson will not be charged in the singer's death. According to The Associated Press California officials said Wednesday (July 28) that they will not file charges against the doctors who were under scrutiny as part of an investigation launched by the state's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Jackson passed away in June 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest. His personal doctor Conrad Murray — who was not one of the seven doctors included in the investigation — has been charged in his death and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter after allegedly giving the star the potent anesthetic propofol.

"I am very disappointed," said Brian Oxman, an attorney for Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson. "The misuse of medications by Michael Jackson in the last years of his life was excessive and to fail to bring that to the public eye is ignoring reality." Oxman is serving as Joe Jackson's lawyer in a wrongful death suit against Murray.

Bureau spokesperson Christine Gasparac told the AP that one of the doctors who was under investigation was referred to the California Medical Board for prescribing drugs to one of Jackson's aliases, however, a spokesperson for the board did not confirm the referral. A spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Agency told the AP that it has also dropped its investigation into Jackson's doctors.

Murray lawyer Ed Chernoff has maintained that the doctor did not administer a fatal dose of propofol and has suggested that either Jackson gave himself the anesthetic or another person may have supplied the late star with the dose. However, an anesthesia expert has said the possibility of Jackson administering the drug himself is unlikely.

A preliminary hearing in the Jackson manslaughter case is slated for August and Murray faces a sentence of up to four years in jail.

Michael Jackson Ranks As Richest Dead Celebrity

Late pop icon's estate brought in more than $275 million in 12 months, according to Forbes.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Peter Still/ Getty Images

In life, Michael Jackson was forever dogged by rumors of financial struggles. But in death, the late pop icon has vaulted to the top of the list of celebrities whose estates generate millions. In fact, according to a new Forbes magazine list, Jackson is by far the richest dead celebrity, with an estate that brought in more than $275 million over the past 12 months.

Jackson's music and "This Is It" documentary have been so lucrative that he outearned the combined hauls of megastars Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and Jay-Z. Not only that, but Jackson also outpaced the combined earnings of all of the other late celebs on the list.

How did he do it? A combination of smart licensing deals cut by the executors of his estate, a huge spike in sales of the singer's catalog since his June 2009 death and, most important, the $250 million worldwide box-office receipts of the tour rehearsal film "This Is It," including a $60 million advance from Sony Pictures. Music sales alone brought in $50 million thanks to heavy radio play and album sales, along with receipts from a Jackson-themed video game and the re-release of his autobiography, "Moon Walk," which added another $50 million to the pile.

"The cash flow on an annual basis is tremendous," Donald David, an estate lawyer who handled the finances of rapper Tupac Shakur after his death, told the magazine. "Sure, it's going to decline eventually, but it's going to be a huge amount in the foreseeable future. [Jackson's] kids are going to have grandkids before that money's gone."

The unprecedented numbers could continue, as a deal with Sony Music to issue unreleased recordings — the first album is due in November — is worth another $200 million to $250 million over the next seven years. Money will also keep flowing in as a result of Jackson's ownership of half of the Sony/ATV catalog, which contains a half a million songs by a stunning array of artists, including Lady Gaga, Elvis Presley, Eminem, Bob Dylan and Beyoncé. That deal alone could rake in $25 million to $50 million a year.

Coming in at #2 on the list is perennial top deceased earner Presley, whose receipts shot up $5 million to give him $60 million in the past year thanks to the newly launched Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show featuring his music as well as the boost in licensed products and merchandise in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday.

The estate of "Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien banked $50 million, mostly due to the sales of 500,000 books over the past year, followed by the estate of "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz ($33 million) and, rounding out the top 5, late Beatle John Lennon ($17 million), whose earnings ballooned 30 years after his murder as a result of the re-release of his solo catalog, licensing deals with Cisco and Mont Blanc and receipts from "Beatles Rock Band."

The rest of the top 10: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" author Stieg Larsson ($15 million), Dr. Seuss (born Theodor Geisel) ($11 million), Albert Einstein ($10 million), New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner ($8 million) and "My Funny Valentine" songwriter Richard Rodgers ($7 million).

Are you surprised at how much money the King of Pop's estate has generated since his death? Let us know what you think in the comments.

'Captain America' Shows Off His Shield In First-Look Photo

Chris Evans appears in costume on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
By Eric Ditzian

Spies on the set of "Captain America: The First Avenger" have been snapping photos and recording shaky videos of Chris Evans and his co-stars since shortly after the production got underway in the U.K. this summer.

But now we have our first, Marvel-approved look at Evans as Captain America in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. The cover image showcases the actor in his World War II-era, stars-and-stripes outfit and clutching that iconic shield at his side. The look on Evans' face tells you all you need to know: Do not mess with the Captain.

Evans admitted to the magazine that he had a ton of apprehension about accepting the role, a move that required him to sign a six-picture deal with Marvel. "At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, 'If the movie bombs, I'm f---ed. If the movie hits, I'm f---ed!' " he said. "I was just scared. I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear.

"I can't believe was almost too chicken to play Captain America," he added.

The film is set in 1942 and tells the story of how Steve Rogers (Evans) goes from a skinny kid with an itch to kill Nazis to a superhero called Captain America, thanks to a top-secret military program called Project: Rebirth. Haley Atwell plays his love interest, Major Peggy Carter, while Sebastian Stan has stepped into the role of sidekick Bucky Barnes. Hugo Weaving, meanwhile, plays Red Skull, Hitler's über-evil weapons chief and, inevitably, the Captain's adversary after he forms plans to use a fantastical device called the Tesseract to conquer the world.

"The interesting thing about [Captain America] is that he's an everyman who, in the course of a few minutes, become a perfect human specimen," said director Joe Johnston. "That has to create some interesting personal issues. I saw it as an opportunity to make a superhero movie that felt real, that didn't have to rely on an overabundance of fantasy elements."

Phuket FC

Phuket FC did not make the most auspicious of starts in the lowest tier of professional Thai football.

Formed only weeks before the start of the 2009 Division Two (Southern Section) season and managed by a local politician, the team unsurprisingly failed to thrive.

Despite a succession of managerial changes and a mid-season makeover that saw virtually the entire playing squad overhauled, the side still finished bottom of the division.

Attendance at the Surakul Stadium was extremely poor and Phuket FC failed to record a single home win in front of this small handful of supporters.

'Breaking Dawn' Cast: Meet The New Faces

After the Twi-verse adds eight new castmembers, we introduce you to the relative unknowns.
By Eric Ditzian

Olga Fonda
Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

After Summit Entertainment announced eight new supporting castmembers for "Breaking Dawn," fans reacted with a collective, "Um, who?"

Yes, folks like Olga Fonda and Masami Kosaka don't exactly have the name recognition of a Kristen Stewart or a Taylor Lautner, but each new castmember comes to the Twi-verse with previous acting credits and some online video. We gathered a handy guide for Twi-hards.

Olga Fonda
This Russian model and actress has quietly been building her Hollywood résumé in recent years, with brief appearances in shows like "How I Met Your Mother" and "Entourage." This past summer she was cast in Hugh Jackman's upcoming futuristic boxing drama, "Real Steel."

"Living in Los Angeles has given me an opportunity to pursue my dreams and has been able to open the doors to unlimited possibilities," Fonda told Maine's Kennebec Journal last year.

A 2007 YouTube video showcases Fonda at Los Angeles Fashion Week: her easy smile, her accented English and her sultry moves on the runway.

"So many girls trying to be models, like, 'Oh my god, I want to be a model!' Nobody really knows the reality of it," she said. "It's a lot of hard work, but at the same time it's a lot of fun."

Amadou Ly
Born in Senegal, Ly and his personal story became well-known in 2006 when a New York Times article reported how he had been abandoned by his mother and could not board a plane to Atlanta after his East Harlem robotics team won a spot in a national competition. The exposure attracted the attention of politicians and Hollywood, and he now has a foreign student visa. He's also building his acting résumé with theater work, a small role in "Law & Order" and several short films.

Masami Kosaka
Kosaka has already shared screen time with two "Twilight" stars, thanks to one scene in "The Runaways" in which he played a Japanese journalist interviewing Stewart and Dakota Fanning's characters. The actor has uploaded his reel to YouTube, showing off not only that "Runaways" scene, but his work in "FlashForward," "What About Brian" and a low-budget action flick called "The Legend of Samurai."

Wendell Pierce
Pierce has been part of the HBO family since 2002, first starring in "The Wire" and currently in "Treme," set in New Orleans where he also lives and which he never sees accurately portrayed in movies or TV.

"Hollywood hasn't been helpful with that; if I see another movie where everyone has Cajun accents and some guy in a jester hat is dancing behind a window, I'll go crazy," he told MTV News earlier this year. "People come here and ... then they're pleasantly surprised to see how Mardi Gras is a family affair. ... [It's] not just 'Girls Gone Wild.' It's also the biggest block party in the world, where people get to meet their neighbors and celebrate with their neighbors ... on an annual basis."

Sebastiao Lemos
The floppy-haired, goateed Brazilian native has appeared in the TV series "Força-Tarefa," which literally translates to "Task Force," and a 2008 Portuguese-language short film titled "Cara e Coroa," which can be found on YouTube.

According to a Brazilian "Twilight" fan site, in the short, Lemos plays a cop with ties to organized crime.

Janelle Froehlich
Froehlich appeared in the short-lived, syndicated, bilingual drama series "Hacienda Heights," which aired on a local Los Angeles TV channel. This summer she uploaded an audition video to YouTube for an unspecified project in which she appears to play a young journalist.

Ty Olsson
Olsson has been working steadily on the big and small screen for more than a decade, and as you might expect, his mug is all over YouTube: from interview segments on local news channels to spots on TV shows like "Men in Trees." He played a real-life 9/11 victim in "Flight 93" and was last seen on the big screen in "2012."

What do you think of all these new castmembers? Who is your early favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Britney Spears Inspires Another 'Glee'-Cap Musical

Heather Morris' moves and John Stamos' grin have us breaking into song.
By Jim Cantiello

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"
Photo: FOX

From the Heather Morris-starring scene-for-scene video re-creations to the sight of Lea Michele as a sexy schoolgirl to the debut of John Stamos, this week's Britney Spears-themed episode of "Glee" has everyone talking. But it has us singing. Without further ado, here are the lyrics to this week's "Glee"-cap!

Britney
You took over this week's "Glee."
Oh, baby you can hit me
One or two more times.

But when you act,
It's all sorts of crazy wack,
It's so good to have you back,
Even though you look 39.

A full hour of hits that are yours,
But then Lea performed Paramore.
[Jim speaks: What the f--- was that about?]
Oh, Britney, take these kids on tour.

[Jim speaks: Seriously, Heather Morris did Britney better than Britney ever did Britney.
Clip: Santana says, "Leave Britney alone!"
Jim: Sorry!
]

[To the tune of "... Baby One More Time"]
Oh, Stamos, Stamos,
How was I supposed to know
That you and "Glee" are besties?
Oh, Stamos, Stamos,
You're not singing "Kokomo."
No love for Uncle Jesse.

Mating with crazy eyes,
They're dating,
Schuester's fading,
Student's masturbating,
Oh, that's gross!

John Stamos has a dentist chair.
He gives "Glee" kids
So much sweet air.
When they go under,
They lose their mind.
Drugs are sublime!
Then it becomes Britney time!

[To the tune of "Everytime"]
Videos redone
Are so much fun,
But baby

Everytime "Glee" tributes
The plot falls by the wayside.
They just want you to buy
lots more soundtracks, baby.

"Glee" is structured like a porn.
They talk and then perform.
Scenes are shoehorned
Who needs story, baby?!

[Jim takes a hit of nitrous oxide, collapses.]

'Batman 3' Will Be Called 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Director Christopher Nolan adds that Riddler will not appear in third 'Batman' film.
By Josh Wigler

Christian Bale in "The Dark Knight"

In 2012, the Dark Knight will rise.

At long last, Christopher Nolan third "Batman" film. And as was the case with "The Dark Knight," the very mention of Batman himself is nowhere to be found. Instead, the critically acclaimed director of "Memento" and "Inception" will call his next film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Nolan confirmed the title in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, adding that the developing comic book adaptation will not have a role for the Riddler. The famous Batman rogue has long been considered a leading candidate to be the villain in "The Dark Knight Rises," with actors including Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumored for the part. But Nolan ended the debate with one rather definitive statement: "It won't be the Riddler."

In addition to confirming the title and removing one possible villain from the pool, Nolan stated that Warner Bros. executives have agreed with the director's desire to avoid 3-D for the third "Batman" film. Instead, "The Dark Knight Rises" will employ "high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector."

The pieces are certainly falling into place for "The Dark Knight Rises." Not only has Nolan announced the film's new title, he's also started the hunt for new actors. Earlier this month, his "Inception" collaborator Tom Hardy landed an unidentified lead role, with many assuming that he's taking on a villainous part. With his secret identity preserved, only one thing is certain about Hardy's character: He's not the Riddler.

"We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones," the director said.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20, 2012. Shooting begins in April in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

David Arquette on Howard Stern Phone Call: My Bad!

Note to David Arquette: when your wife asks for a legal separation because she's sick of playing mother to an immature fool, there are many ways to win her back.

Calling a nationally syndicated talk show and ranting about your lack of a sex life with her is not one of them.

Legally Separated

But that's exactly what the actor did yesterday morning, just a day after his split with Courteney Cox went public. Now, Arquette says he went too far with the details revealed in the call.

"I went on Howard Stern yesterday to provide clarity and honesty about what I'm experiencing, but while doing that I shared too much," he said. "It's alright for me to be honest about my own feelings, but in retrospect some of the information I provided involved others and for that I am sorry and humbled."

Arquette also admitted to sleeping with bartender Jasmine Waltz, a fact that celebrity fling machine isn't happy to have in the open.

"Thank you all for your love and support at this time," the actor Tweeted. "I'm trying figuring out how to be the best person I can be. But it's been a process of trial and error... life is a process of spiritual evolution. I'm sure Courteney and myself will emerge from this painful time better people for what we've learned."

Or at least more famous. When was the last time David Arquette received this much attention?!?

Usher Dazzles On The VMA Stage With 'DJ' And 'OMG'

Ush combined his legendary dance skills with spectacular special effects.
By Rochell D. Thomas

Usher performs at the 2010 VMAs
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing's true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to "show why you're king," and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn't disappoint.

As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday's practice performance for his hit "OMG," Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher's "OMG" clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.

If Usher was disappointed, he didn't let it show. When he launched the "OMG" portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher's name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren't for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.

Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn't say a word. Didn't need to.

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

The King is back!

Usher thrilled the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night with his stunning combination performance of "OMG" and "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love."

The singer moved and grooved, proving that he's the R&B star that everyone pays attention to for the big moments.

After a lukewarm reception to his previous album, the singer busted back onto the charts and radio with his latest set, Raymond v. Raymond, and he's been proving doubters wrong since its release.

"We all sat in a room and came up with a concept for the stage, and then we took that concept to Usher," VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News about the star's setup. "We said to him, 'We want to do the best televised dance routine that you've done in years. Let's show why you're the king.' "

Usher handily delivered.

Durng his rehearsals he was as focused as Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant on the eve of game seven for the championship.

His choreographer led the way with Usher's backup dancers while the "OMG" star looked on intently; he only jumped in a handful of times, instead choosing to harness his energy for Sunday night's big show.

The crooner has ruled the charts in the past with a mix of uptempo grooves and slow-burning ballads.

But Usher has reinvented himself this year with the will.i.am dance tune "OMG" and his latest single, "DJ Got Us Falling in Love."

Usher plays to win, and after his stirring performance it's clear that the crown still rests securely on his head.

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

'Social Network' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

We friended this production a long time ago, and this is what we've learned.

"The Social Network" is a whodunit for the Internet age. Was the billion-dollar behemoth known as Facebook solely the idea of Mark Zuckerberg, a flip-flop-wearing hacker at Harvard? Or did he lie, cheat and steal his way toward Web glory, leaving wronged classmates in his egocentric wake?

That's the central question David Fincher explores in his new film, penned by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg. The film delivers no easy answers, just a riveting, two-hour ride showcasing the creative energy and energetic backstabbing of young entrepreneurs in Cambridge and Silicon Valley.

MTV News friended the production early on, following every casting development and trailer release since the project was announced. Before you hit the theater this weekend, point and click your way toward total information awareness with MTV News' "Social Network" cheat sheet.

Friending Hollywood
Word leaked in June of last year that Fincher was circling the rather-straightforward project, a curious move for a director known for such a distinct visual style. What would a guy who brought Tyler Durden of "Fight Club" and John Doe of "Seven" to the screen do with a nerd from the Ivy League?

By the next month, there was still no official announcement about Fincher's involvement, and when we asked producer Kevin Spacey about his helming duties, Spacey responded, "I think we are close to announcing a director." September came, Fincher had signed on, and the search was on for the actor to play Zuckerberg. Names that cropped up on the Web included Eisenberg, Michael Cera and Paul Rust, but the role eventually went to Eisenberg (who'd previously issued MTV News a non-denial denial of his involvement. Justin Timberlake came aboard at the same time, followed by Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara and Max Minghella.

"I just made a tape, probably 20 pages of dialogue, and sent in the tape because I live in New York City and they were casting in California," Eisenberg told us in January about the casting process. "Then they called me for a meeting. It was fairly painless."

Removing Privacy Settings
By that point, filming was already under way. The first official look at the film didn't arrive until June, delivering the memorable tagline, "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." The first teaser trailer dropped days later and contained not a single frame from the actual movie, just voice-overs and all-caps words like "punk" and "genius." As odd as it sounds, the trailer was as perfect as a teaser trailer can be. A second teaser popped up the next month: still with no film footage but with similarly intense voice-overs and imagery from Facebook pages themselves.

Not until the middle of July did we get our first glimpse of real "Social Network" footage. Set to a choral take on Radiohead's "Creep," the trailer gave us snappy dialogue, looks at Harvard's boozy social life and the backstabbing that began even before Facebook went online.

Status Updates
As the film's October release date approached, the cast began to speak more openly about the production. "Why actors love working with [Fincher] and why I loved working with him is because you try a scene in 200 different ways; you know he is able to edit together several different performances for each role," Eisenberg told us. "We would be often doing half the scene 60 times one way, then 60 times a little more engaged."

Timberlake spoke with us about how the film is potentially divisive. His personal experience was that some of his friends sided with Zuckerberg's version of events, while others agreed with his adversaries. "But one of my friends specifically said ... 'I don't 100 percent agree with any of the characters, but I don't disagree with any of them,' " Timberlake said. "Life is life. Things happen sloppily."

Life can also be cruel, which is why, even after making a movie so intimately tied to Internet culture, Eisenberg avoids reading about himself online at all costs. "I know that I'm written about online — we're all written about online," he told us. "It's incredibly painful to read it, so I stay off of it. People can write things that are terribly cruel because of the anonymity of the Internet."
