Amana Fontanella-Khan: Mumbai's red-light district is a reminder of the city's social inequality

Most of the time, Mumbai is a city that doesn't bother hiding its flaws.

Living cheek-by-jowl, the sordid flanks the sumptuous everywhere you turn and unlike some other cities, the slums here can be found in the best neighborhoods.

It may not all be perfect, but the fact that the good, bad and ugly are all plainly visible to outsiders suggests that India has enough democratic transparency to not hide or force away these problems.
